Stat Review: Through Pebble Beach 2

Big week for the long hitters, as many of them finished in the top 20.  No new developments in the golf world’s tussle with the Groove Rule.  News came out during the week that USGA officials met with John Solheim to discuss a compromise to the exemption of Ping Eye 2 grandfather clause. As promised, here is the first installment of what I intend to be a weekly review of the statistical leaders on the PGA Tour.  In case you are unaware of the intent of this review, it is an attempt to survey the impact of the USGA’s Groove Rule on the performance of PGA Tour players.  Remember, the Read the rest of this entry »

Grading the Groove Rule

It didn’t take long for the recently implemented Groove Rule to cause controversy on the PGA Tour.  Props to Phil Mickelson for being the first player to publicly bash it.  The word is other players are not particularly fond of Lefty, but I could care less.  Mickelson has always shown his appreciation for fans of the game, and been true blue to whoever has chosen to pony up as his endorsees.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Black Bag Project

The groove deal is done.  Endorsed by the few who’s opinion matters, it appears we are on the way to dumbing down our golf clubs.  As many others have pointed out, this move is unprecedented.  Never in the history of the game has a product which was deemed conforming, (for 20+ years), been declared non-conforming.  Here’s another small bite of history which may interest you. Tour Player Board Defers Groove Vote to Finchem. He says “Go”

They were given a golden opportunity to do the right thing.  In one sense, the PGA Tour’s Policy Board held the fate of the golf industry in their nine member hands.  This group met yesterday at Congressional C.C. to vote on a timetable for adopting the USGA’s groove modification rule.  The issue was to adopt the rule as originally submitted on Jan. 1, 2010, or to extend the date for a year.  Prior to the vote, the USGA had stated that if the vote was to defer they would also extend their mandate to follow suit.  Read the rest of this entry »

Golfweek Magazine Highlights Groove Rule Fallout

Props to Golfweek Magazine.  The most recent issue contains three articles about the upcoming groove rule change.  And unfortunately none of the articles have a happy ending.  If you make a living in the golf industry, I would recommend you give these articles a read.  It appears there is growing trepidation among Tour players about the new grooves, and how it will affect their game.  Read the rest of this entry »
