Slick Move for Chilly Guests

As we here in Florida emerge from nearly a week of nightly sub-freezing temperatures, I want to pass along something I witnessed.  Talk about making the most of the situation…this clever merchandising maneuver is straight-up guerilla, and something every shop manager should consider adding to his or her bag of tricks.  It’s hardly a home run in terms of dollars, but last I checked it all counts.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Real Fallout from “Tigergate”.

For those who have from time-to-time read my views on the golf industry, you know I try to refrain as much as possible from identifying specific people, companies, and products in a less than flattering manner.  Unless they really step in it.  I did call out Dick Rugge, of the USGA, for the groove debacle and I’ll stand by that.  Otherwise, I try to do as my mother suggested many times over…”If you don’t have something good to say about someone, keep your mouth shut.” Read the rest of this entry »

Golf Buyer’s Guide to Eyewear: Part 4

Frames: Anatomy, Form, and Function

The most basic definition of a sunglass frame is a lens holder.  However, as with any consumer product, elements of style, fashion, and improved functionality play quite a large role in helping to attract attention in the shop.  Much of the sellability of a sunglass line comes from the styling.  The “look” created by the marriage of the frame and lens into a cool looking, better performing product. Sunglass Lenses:  The Heart of the Issue

The first thing I hone in on when checking out a pair of sunglasses is the lens.  They are the part of the sunglass that “works.”  Basically, there are two popular lens materials….glass and plastic.   Read the rest of this entry »

Golf Buyer’s Guide to Eyewear: Part 2

Polarization versus UV Protection:

My initial thought to start this series was to detail the anatomy of a sunglass.  But, I changed my mind.  We will identify the various parts and their proper names as we go.  Instead, I want to jump right in to what appears to be one of the most confusing concepts regarding eyewear: Polarization and UV Protection.  Read the rest of this entry »

The popularity of eyewear in the golf shop has boomed over the past 5 years.  The simple reason for this is that it makes good sense for golfers to wear sunglasses when they play.  Not only for protection of their eyes, but in fact the right eyewear can improve one’s game.  Good quality sunglasses with the appropriate lens tint can enhance visual definition.  Read the rest of this entry »

New Menu Card Shop Sign

Some of you may remember the menu card shop sign project I posted some time back.  Quite a few passers by have downloaded them, I hope they are working well for you.  I just completed a brand new one, a US Open theme, although you can use it throughout the summer by just clipping out the bottom graphic.  Check it out….it’s on the “Contact” page of my web site.  Hope you like it.  Stay tuned more good stuff on the way.

Major Flavor — Finale

When I closed Part 1 of this piece, I mentioned that this final part would provide the bait for you to sell your Limited Edition, Augusta color scheme golf shirts.  With the shirts and the display we’ve created something visually compelling.  To complete this project let’s now talk about adding the flavor of The Masters to your display.  That’s right…we are going to integrate this display with food.  Read the rest of this entry »

Major Flavor — Part 1

With its arrival in Florida, the Tour season is now in full swing.  Although the west coast tournaments are no less important, it just seems like things really start popping when the Tour hits Florida.  It may also have something to do with the fact that at this time of year the northern courses are getting ready for play, so the entire country is starting to think about golf.  Read the rest of this entry »
