Grading the Groove Rule

It didn’t take long for the recently implemented Groove Rule to cause controversy on the PGA Tour.  Props to Phil Mickelson for being the first player to publicly bash it.  The word is other players are not particularly fond of Lefty, but I could care less.  Mickelson has always shown his appreciation for fans of the game, and been true blue to whoever has chosen to pony up as his endorsees.  Read the rest of this entry »

Another Dagger, Part 2 — Ground Zero

The revised rule on grooves goes into effect January 1, 2010.  But make no mistake, damage is already being done.  Starting next year, only elite competitions will require the use of clubs which conform to this new rule.  Top level USGA and R&A competitions and PGA Tour events will all require the new groove irons be in play.  “Ground Zero” for this ruling is obviously Carlsbad, CA.  Read the rest of this entry »

Short Sided?– Try the “Pip”

I want to share with you something I discovered.  I recently added a new shot to my arsenal.  I discovered this during a practice session where, to spice things up a bit, I was experimenting with what I thought was an “out of the box” concept.  Sometimes these things pay off.  In this case the results were very surprising.  I call this shot the “Pip”, and while it is certainly not a new idea, the application of it to a particular situation is.
